"Asian Crossover“ with Zeng Fanzhi, Wang Guangyi, Liao Man, MR, Zhang Xiaogang, Han Yajuan, Ren Zhenyu, Luo Brothers, Liu Fenghua, in Salzburgs art gallery 2C for ART
This exhibition presents a crossover of contemporary Asian art. The group show comprises 11 different artists, mainly from China, among others the Chinese contemporary art in art Zeng Fanzhi, Wang Guangyi and Zhang Xiaogang.
Part of the show are limited edition prints by the Chinese top artists from the first generation like Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Xiaogang or Wang Guangyi. Besides the show presents paintings by important artists of the 2nd generation and of young upcoming artists. The only non-Chinese artist is MR, a well-established Japanese artist of Murakami´s Kaikai Kiki Group.
Chinese artists often deal with cultural discrepancy between the Western world and China, with the rapidly changing economic and social circumstances in their country and with rehabilitation of China´s history. These issues are also a main focus of the exhibition in Salzburg.
Zeng Fanzhi is one of the leading Chinese contemporary artists. Zeng Fanzhi began his famous “Masks” series in the 90ies. All figures of this serious are well-dressed urban citizens wearing white masks which fuse with their faces. This makes the figures look scary as if they were victims of their own role.
Ren Zhenyu has recently achieved fame in Europe through his distinct portrait series of historical and political icons. In his works, Ren plays with a wide spectrum of colours that are juxtaposed to create a unique expressionist interpretation of famous faces and experiments with texture built on layering to reinforce the portrayal of faces from different perspectives. He adopts a manner closer to Pop Art than to the currently dominant Chinese Neo-Realist style.
