1935 born as Christo Javacheff in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, Jeanne-Claude born in Casablanca, Morocco.
1953-1956 Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia
1957 Christo escapes to Vienna, later he gets to Paris
1957 Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna for one semester
1958 Arrival in Paris. Here he creates his first wrappings. Christo paints portraits to earn his living, but he only signs it with his surname Javacheff. Christo and Jeanne-Claude meet when Jeanne-Claude instructs Christo to do a portrait of her mother
1961 they develop different projects, among others the concealing of a public building, piled barrels and Dockside packages for the port in Cologne. In the same year Christo gets his first solo show at a gallery in Cologne
1962 they realize the project „safety curtain – walls of oil barrels“ in Paris, in London they wrap a woman
1964 Christo und Jeanne-Claude move to New York
1968 for documenta 4 in Kassel they create the 5.600 cubic meter package. In Spoleto (Italia) they wrap a fountain and a medieval tower
1971/72 Christo und Jeanne-Claude start with the project "Wrapped Reichstag" which they continuously change in the following years
1971 Wrapped floors, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Museum, Haus Lange, Krefeld
1983 realisation of the big project Surrounded Islands near Florida
1985 wrapping of Pont Neuf in Paris whilst keeping accessible
1991 The Umbrellas links Japan and the USA. The couple had been working on this project since 1984
1995 The wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin is a global media event. With this project Christo and Jeanne-Claude finally made history
1998 Realisation of Wrapped Trees in the Park Berower at Fondation Beyeler in Basel, running until spring 1999
1999 at Gasometer Oberhausen Christo and Jeanne-Claude create The Wall, a 26 meter high and 68 meter wide wall of 13.000 barrels
2009 Jeanne-Claude dies in New York. Christo keeps working from this point as solo artist
2013 Christo installs for a second time after 1999 and The Wall at Gasometer Oberhausen a work. For Big Air Package he creates an air package of 90 meter hight and 5 tons weight in the exhibition hall of 117 meter hight. For this project he uses 20.350 square meters of transparent texile and 4.500 meters of rope.
Currently Christo is in the final preparations for:
Floating Piers, red piers made of elements of polythene with floating bodies. They will lead on 2 islands from the coast of Lago d‘Iseo (Italy) for 16 days;
Over the River – a spanning of Arkansas Rivers in Corolado with a length of 11 kilometers;
Mastaba, width: 300 m, depth: 225 m, hight: 150 m, these are the dimensions of the eventually biggest project in art history, 410.000 oil barrels are to be piled in the desert of Abu Dhabi.
Christo lives and works in New York, in the same studio in which he had lived and worked together with Jeanne-Claudes. Christo´s and Jeanne-Claude´s works are in millions of people´s memory worldwide and are represented in diverse museums around the globe as drawings, paintings, objects, collages and limited editions.
